The Montserrat mountain is 46 km from Barcelona and it is a magical place. As its name says “Serrated – Mountain” it is a rocky mountain full of peaks and natural shapes that seem to have been cut with a saw. In 1987 it was declared Natural Park and it is known as the Magical Mountain because it houses an old Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century where some 80 monks still live. In its church pilgrims and visitors from all over the world gather to bless the Virgin of Montserrat, a polychrome wood carving declared Patroness of Catalonia; known by the nickname of “la Moreneta”.
The visit allows us not only to know its history, but also to admire its landscape and views over the Catalan land. At the access of the monastery there is a small market of typical products: cheeses, caramelised, fig cakes … and of course, its famous “MATÓ”.
Another of its great attractions is its children’s choir “LA ESCOLANÍA” which sings in church every day except Saturdays.
